Students from Pent Valley Technology College transformed boarding opposite Walmsley House Residential Home in Princess Street Folkestone, into a bright modern piece of art, at the request of the local community. The project, named Old Dunn Buildings was funded by East Folkestone Together and organised by Emily Ghassempour, Community Liaison Officer from Shepway District Council. Emily said “Residents in Walmsley House were complaining to the council about the boarding surrounding the derelict site of Old Dunn Buildings. I ascertained from the land owner that due to the recession the site would remain derelict, but that he would be willing to pay for boarding to cover the eyesore. Once the boarding was erected, I approached Pent Valley’s art department with a request for students to design some art boards into a mural.” Year 10 students studying BTEC Art accepted the challenge and with art teacher Mrs Nova Copley visited the residents of Walmsley House. Students established the residents requirements were English Country Garden themed boards. With this requisition in mind, students began to research and plan mood boards. The culmination of this work was unveiled on Thursday 26th January, when students Lauren Dealey, Megan Hampton, Emma Sparkes, Ashley Joyce and Jade Stevens visiting the site to see their work in situ. Local resident, Christine Reeve, who arrived with the press photographer, said “Even today, with the weather rainy and grey, the vibrant paintings have brightened the outlook for the residents of Walmsley House and are exactly as they requested.” Student Jade Stevens said, “It was good to be able to work with the community. I will also be using this piece of work towards my qualifications”
